近5年來，榴莲热潮不减，一些原本属于次等货的榴莲品种也逐渐受到注目。当中以 Durio kutejensis (Hassk) 这种半野生的榴莲最受到垂目。D. kutejensis 生长在婆罗洲的森林里包括沙巴与砂拉越也相当普遍。目前亦有一些人把这个品种种在果园里；从树的生长型态来看，这品种与普通榴莲 D. zibethinus Murr. 很相似但仍有几分野性的轮郭。
Durio kutejensis 的特点就是果肉除了黄色之外也有深橙色的，而且花串呈红色。在加里曼丹东部，这种榴莲和普通榴莲交配后形成称为 Lai 的榴莲，果肉色有黄有浅橙。印尼的研究员对这些品种进行研究后整理出6种口味不错的 Lai 品种。这些品种 (Lai Durian1 – 6)有商业潛能而被收集，如下列：
